Preface
When the public in Hong Kong is so much concerned about preserving and protecting our environment, an exhibition of Mrs. Beryl M. Walden’s original water-colour paintings of living specimens of the wild flowers of Hong Kong and Guangdong is a most timely event.
Mrs. Walden has spent nearly 30 years sketching living specimens of wild flowers in South China and Hong Kong. This solo exhibition marks the 30th anniversary of Mrs. Walden first exhibition. It features 100 original paintings of wild flowers in Hong Kong and South China.
The tradition of depicting botanical specimens combines science and art. Botanical artists seek to understand the structure of plants and to communicate this knowledge to their audience in a scientifically accurate and aesthetically pleasing manner. It is indeed an honour and pleasure for the University Library System to present Mrs. Walden’s botanical art to the University community and beyond.
